Description
B&W pelican portrait--Brown pelican taken on Marco Island, FL. Pelicans are characterized by a long beak and a large throat pouch used for catching prey and draining water from the scooped-up contents before swallowing. Oftentimes the birds will hit the surface of the water at 41 mph or more! Brown pelicans will often scoop up a good deal of water when diving to catch their prey (primarily fish). Since their belly cannot hold more than their beak, they only swallow their prey. How do they do that? The water is released by tipping and shaking their head back and forth to allow the water to drain out before swallowing.1725pd
